JD Peace: A Creative Software Engineer Building MedTech Solutions
At Orthogonal, we celebrate the unique journeys and expertise that shape our team. This month, we’re spotlighting Bernhard Kappe, our Founder and CEO, whose multidisciplinary background and entrepreneurial drive laid the foundation for Orthogonal’s mission. From studying math, computer science, business, and philosophy to launching ventures in analytics and digital health, Bernhard has always sought to apply structured thinking to real-world challenges. His vision continues to guide our work at the intersection of MedTech, Software as a Medical Device (SaMD), and responsible innovation.
Growing up in a family of mathematicians, Bernhard Kappe was surrounded by abstract thinking from an early age. Although he admired the elegance of math, he was drawn to the practical side of how ideas could be applied in the real world. His curiosity led him down a multidisciplinary academic path at Penn, where he studied mathematics, business, computer science, and philosophy. These seemingly divergent interests all pointed toward a central question: how can structured thinking improve lives?
After early roles in M&A at Merrill Lynch and software development at Microsoft and Starbucks, Bernhard’s entrepreneurial spirit took hold. He launched ventures in analytics and consulting, navigating the challenges of product-market fit while teaching himself software development from scratch. Eventually, he co-founded Orthogonal, focusing on technology that tangibly improves healthcare. His work began with early digital health efforts and evolved into Software as a Medical Device (SaMD). For Bernhard, success is not defined by prestige, but by building something meaningful, measurable, and lasting.
Bernhard views today’s MedTech landscape as a convergence of several transformative trends: ubiquitous connectivity, the maturation of digital health, and the rapid advancement of AI. These forces hold enormous potential but also introduce complexity, particularly in a field where lives are at stake and regulations often lag behind innovation. He believes Orthogonal is uniquely positioned to help the industry adapt and advance, not just quickly but responsibly.
“We need to move fast without breaking things,” Bernhard says, referencing Orthogonal’s core philosophy. He takes pride in the company’s role in shaping industry guidance, particularly through contributions such as AAMI TR-115, which helps peers navigate the adoption of modern methods. For organizations aiming to bridge the gap between innovation and compliance, Bernhard views Orthogonal as a practical and forward-thinking partner.
Outside of work, Bernhard continues exploring patterns and systems through travel, reading, and parenting. He and his family spend extended time in the Philippines, gaining perspective on healthcare systems around the world. That cross-cultural lens, he says, sharpens his sense of purpose and keeps him grounded.
He also finds joy in watching his kids grow into their ambitions. Helping them navigate the transition into adulthood has become one of his most meaningful personal projects. And if you’re wondering about surprises, yes, he once taught salsa dancing. That love for rhythm and movement still influences how he thinks and works: fluid, thoughtful, and always seeking connection.
Bernhard shows up every day motivated by a belief that work should matter. “If we can improve outcomes for patients even a little bit faster, that adds up to something significant,” he says. He’s committed to Orthogonal’s mission of accelerating innovation in healthcare by building fast feedback loops and promoting agile thinking, all while maintaining high standards for safety and clarity.
In the next five years, he hopes to expand Orthogonal’s reach and impact while supporting a new generation of leaders who can carry the mission forward. His goal is to shape a thriving organization that scales not only in size but also in values, delivering smarter, faster, and more equitable patient outcomes worldwide.
